2014 Exhibition : Traverse

Within New Zealands South Island are our spectacular Southern Alps. A mountain range of incredible beauty so breath taking, so pure and exhilarating. This exhibition reflects on a 3-4 day journey into the wilderness known as the 'Gillespi Pass Circuit' These works depict the sheer magnitude, power and energy of the area challenging the use of form and space. The paintings reflect the feelings and emotions of the enviroment that I experienced, which often this gives the viewer a better "representation" of the subject. Unforgiving rock faces, snow capped mountains peaks to naturally formed water catchments of 'Lake Crucible', with floating ice bergs. The mountainous and glaciated heart of the park is unspoilt and truly a wilderness. With acrylic paint my intention has been to capture the different layers of land mass. In many cases not only what we observe above ground but whats beneath us. Layer upon layer. Paintly blocks of colour appear in unexpected ways combined with working drawings underneath, seen through the transparent paint also reflect the natural pathways beneath the surface. An incredibly challenging tramp for me however I was rewarded with incredible beauty, and it gave me my inspiration for this exhibition.
